German freelance choreographer, dance artist and founder of the "Floating Roots" movement language, Tillmann Becker was born in Indonesia. He began his career as a dancer with the Coburg City Ballet in Germany, where he also worked as a physiotherapist. He later moved to the Netherlands to broaden his dance and choreographic vocabulary and completed his dance training at the ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem.
Engagements as a dancer have taken him to the Staatstheater Braunschweig, the Theater Bielefeld, the Ballet of the Landestheater Flensburg, the Unterwegstheater Heidelberg, the Thalia Theater Hamburg and the Staatstheater Kassel. In addition to independent projects in Europe, he has performed in works by Marco Goecke, Angelin Preljocaj, Roy Assaf, Amos Ben-Tal, Noa Shadur, Jeori Dubbe, Gregor Zoellig, Simone Sandroni, Henrietta Horn, Hans-Henning Paar, Helena Waldmann, Ashley Lobo, Jan Pusch and Katrín Hall.
In 2012 he won 2nd prize at the International Choreography Competition "No Ballet" in Ludwigshafen. He was nominated for the "ITs Krisztina de Châtel Award" in Amsterdam/ Netherlands with his duet "The one we act, the other we are", choreographed for Milan Kampfer and himself. He was twice a semi-finalist at the "International Choreographic Competition Hanover" in Germany.
For his work "Babylon" he received a scholarship from TANZAllianz, a cooperation between UnterwegsTheater Heidelberg and Theater- und Orchester Heidelberg. His latest works "baby on fire" and "untold paradox" were performed live and online at LOT-Theater e.V. Braunschweig. His therapeutic knowledge and cultural heritage are inherent components of inspiration in his work.
As a guest lecturer he has performed at various city and state theatres in Germany and teaches for the artists' agency ZAV. In 2016 he was guest professor at the Shenzhen Arts School (China) in cooperation with TanzArt OstWest and Tanzcompagnie Gießen under the direction of Tarek Assam.
In 2021 Tillmann choreographed and performed TV Idents for 3sat, a German television channel with a cultural focus. Since 2022 he has been touring with the Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov and danced the opening of the Festival d'Avignon in collaboration with the Thalia Theater Hamburg and the Gogol Center Moscow.
For the season 2022/2023, Tillmann has been engaged as
rehearsal director for the dance company of the Staatstheater Kassel /
TANZ_KASSEL under the artistic direction of Thorsten Teubl.
For the 2023/2024 season, Tillmann has been engaged as
guest rehearsal director for the dance company of the Staatstheater Braunschweig under the artistic direction of Gregor Zöllig.
Most recently, he has assisted choreographer Sita Ostheimer in her productions at Volkstheater Rostock, Theater Pforzheim, Staatstheater Kassel, Staatstheater Braunschweig and for Xiexin Dance Theater in Shanghai, China.
